  2. I had a very nicely shattered iPhone 3G. I was either going to fix it, break it, or hurl it into the ocean. I look at my iPhone as a phone, and tiny computer, not a status symbol or anything like that, so I figured I’d try to do it myself.

If you look at your iPhone as this perfect little device and want it to be a perfect little device, have someone else do it. The process of replacing the screen is difficult (specifically only one step), and once this thing is taken apart by a novice, will never be exactly the same… it’ll be good, it’ll work well, but once you commit to this process, it’s forever.

    Some pointers:

1.) Watch the YT videos on how to do this.

2.) Don’t pry the glass off, use the suction cup. Prying in there (like on the YT vid) will affect your rubber seal. The rubber ring around the plastic that holds the glass will likely take some damage. Mine took a good bit of damage on this because I pried it off.

3.) To get the plastic apart from the glass, you need to heat the glue with a hair dryer. Now, this plastic part that holds the glass is VERY thin, and will never be perfectly straight again. This is expected, it’s inevitable. This heating process and removal should take to 10-15 minutes as you adapt to the learning curve of “this is too much pressure I’m going to break it” and just enough that it starts to come apart

4.) Removing the LCD: SPREAD THE GUIDERAILS ON THE SIDE OUTWARD and the LCD will basically fall out. There’s NO FORCE required to get the LCD out. It drops out. If you are using any pressure, it’s too much

5.) Reassembly is tricky, and I’m not sure where I went wrong, but my Home Button no longer works. Be extra careful when you remove the glass from the bottom (home) piece of the plastic. My phone was shattered at the top, and were I to do this again, I think I would shatter the whole screen to make the pieces smaller, easier to remove (more time consuming, but better result I imagine), and less damage to the home button area.

Either I tanked the ribbon cable, or the re-assembly isn’t making contact with the connectors on the mobo due to warped plastic, I’m not sure. I jailbroke it and used a home button app, so thats my workaround until I feel like going in there and screwing around again.

The toolset that comes with it is fine. And if you don’t go toolset, just make sure you use a magnetic tiny screwdriver. These are the tiniest screws I’ve ever encountered. Without a magnetic screwdriver, it would have taken FAR longer to reassemble.

Also, make sure that you are locked into the screw, push down with some force, and slowly turn. With this toolset, and my iPhone, I didn’t strip anything, but all of this looks like it could be very strippable if you just whack away at it.

The process is not simple, it’s not overly complex, but it is a process that takes time, patience, and will change your phone from being a sealed device to potentially not. But, as far as build quality and the replacement screen itself, its perfectly fine. Its just the process that sucks.

  3. I received my package today… Thank you for not including directions… I had a cracked phone that at least worked… now I have a phone that does not work at all.

  4. The only thing keeping me from giving this product a 5 star rating is its lack of instructions. Other than that it took me about 45 minutes to replace my cracked screen. iPhone works and looks as good as new now.

  5. Product came as advertised. Many various type of tolls on the package and the instructions on-line made all the difference.
